To journey with... connection relationship well-being
An integrative approach
What is Creative Arts Therapy?
Creative Arts therapy is a form of Psychotherapy that uses creative processes to help a person explore their inner thoughts and feelings. Finding the words to express ourselves is sometimes difficult. A holistic creative approach, combined with traditional talk therapy, can often help elicit the change a person is seeking. Working alongside a professionally trained Creative Arts Therapist can stimulate self-awareness, manage behaviour, and improve self-compassion. By gaining insight and understanding through creative expression, clients often experience a greater sense of physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Arts modalities include (though are not limited to) visual arts-making, movement, music, roleplay, poetic writing, somatic inquiry and breathwork. No artistic knowledge or skill is required, but rather an openness to explore.
• A qualified Creative Arts Therapist is a trained professional with a Clinical Masters degree in Creative Arts Therapies (MA CAT).
• Creative Arts Therapists work in a variety of settings: private practice, hospitals, schools, prisons, community / corporate organisations, and wellness clinics.
• Creative Arts Therapists work with a diverse range of people and their needs. All ages and life stages: individuals, groups, communities.
• Creative Arts Therapists are trained in multiple modalities and psychotherapeutic practices: talk, creative, somatics, mindfulness-based, play, and CBAT.
• Creative Arts Therapists can address personal / relational problems, treat complex trauma, and assist with mental or medical health challenges.
• A Creative Arts Therapist (AThR) must be clinically certified and registered with a governing body (ANZACATA) to assess and treat clients.
"I always looked forward to my sessions with Sarah, who felt genuinely empathetic, working collaboratively alongside me to make sense of life's ups and downs through a variety of expressive approaches. I thoroughly recommend her to anyone in search of a personable, kind therapist, who will respond authentically to what you are feeling moment to moment."
Age 36 (She/Her)"I felt so comfortable in my therapy sessions with Sarah. From our first meeting I felt held and supported to explore ways of moving forward. I always felt in control of my own process and my own therapeutic journey, which is important to me. Sarah's ability to hold space allowed me to go to a deeper level of my own self-understanding. In the past I have mostly received talking therapy. I found working with Sarah much more beneficial than talking therapy alone. I was able to process emotions and life events through exploring different forms of creativity which has improved my sense of well-being. It feels like working creatively within a therapy session allowed me to respond to what was needed in the moment, sometimes words alone are not enough. I am in awe of artmaking and its potential to be a powerful medicine."

About my practice...
I consider it a privilege to do this mahi.
I work from a humanistic, person-centred perspective that values creative strength-based approaches to health and well-being. I consider the whole client and work with them to explore bespoke therapeutic practices that best suit their needs. My intention is to honour curiosity as a central tenet within the therapeutic process. I find this helpful as it allows us to step away from judgment and gently regard the troublesome parts of ourselves and others with openness. Creating a safe and respectful space to build an authentic therapeutic relationship is important to me as we journey together. I respect a client's capacity to make meaning from their own lived experience. I will guide the process and at times, if appropriate, will provide a gentle challenge. I endeavour to help clients see themselves as I see them - made up of multiple parts that have value and while at times can feel fragmented, are capable of healing.

I employ a variety of therapeutic practices that are client specific. I aim to balance the top-down approach of talk therapy with creative processes that aim to provide an authentic and engaging experience.
Working in an integrative way allows me to balance creative multimodal/intermodal practices alongside more traditional approaches to mental health and well-being. I often draw on somatic and mindfulness-based practices to enhance and inform the mind/body/breath connection.
I am experienced in helping clients with:
• Stress • Anxiety • Depression • Personal / Relational difficulties • Self-awareness • Insight • Empowerment • Trauma • Traumatic experience • Grief • Bereavement • Neurodiversity • Social / Behavioural challenges
Therapeutic Services
I offer a range of psychotherapeutic services. Sometimes we need someone to talk to that can help us gain perspective or insight into life's tricky bits. Sometimes we experience a kind of stuckness that can prevent us from exploring new ways of doing or being in the world. At times we may need assistance in processing grief or traumatic experience.
Whatever your situation, the aim is to assist in helping you improve your overall well-being.

A place of exploration...
...it is so easy to dismiss how far we have travelled, but for the ART.
It is the tangible evidence that we have journeyed, we have begun something.
It is the proof that we are alive, that we are part of a shifting landscape through which movement is possible.
FAQ's
Do I have to be good at art?
No, not at all. The focus is on the process rather than the product. Creative Arts Therapists do not judge or interpret your creations. Our role is to help you to discover and make meaning for yourself. Clients are often surprised at how enjoyable the process is, especially adults who may not have had the opportunity to explore in a creative way for some time.
Do I need to bring anything?
Just yourself. All materials are supplied.
What if I don't feel like art making and just want to talk?
That is absolutely fine. Creative processes are not mandatory. You always have the choice to work in a way that feels right for you - together we will figure it out.
What if I decide this is not for me?
The therapeutic relationship is the most important factor in determining outcome. You need to feel comfortable with your therapist and the service they offer. If you decide not to continue at any stage I will suggest other therapists or services that may be suitable.
How many session will I need?
This depends on a number of factors. Most people find between 6-12 sessions helpful. You may only need a few sessions to address an issue or concern, or you may prefer a long term approach. We will discuss this and work together to map out a plan that best suits your needs.
Can I bring a support person?
Yes. It is also important for a parent or guardian to accompany a child for the first session. If you feel comfortable with me as your therapist, this intial session is where we will sign consent forms.
